The FEI/WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses takes place in Le Lion d’Angers, France, this week, from the 18th to 22nd October. The first phase, Dressage, got underway this morning (Thursday).
A total of 28 Irish-bred horses will contest the championship across the Six Year Old (CH-M-YH-CCI2*-L) and Seven Year Old (CH-M-YH-CCI3*-L) divisions. With 116 horses entered for this year’s competition, it means that Irish horses make up just shy of one quarter of the entries, at 24%.
Breeders from all four provinces of Ireland are represented, with no one breeder having more than one home-bred competing in Le Lion d'Angers. Two Irish riders compete on horses that they also bred, and still co-own. These are Dublin’s Sara Glynn with Granny Jeans Unicorn (Jack of Diamonds X Touchdown) and Tipperary’s Padraig McCarthy with MGH Zabaione (Zavall VDL X Acobat II).
Of the 28 Irish Sport Horse entries, none are sired by the same stallion. Only two stallions, Cruising and Touchdown, are represented twice as dam sires among the Irish Sport Horses competing. Three of the 28 Irish Sport Horses are sired by a Thoroughbred (xx) stallion; Drumnaconnell Kobie (by Road To Happiness xx), Millridge Athos (by Grand Gayle xx) , SF Sportsfield Rising Star (by Golden Master xx). Only one of the 28 is out of a full Thoroughbred dam - Tullibards Tick The Boxes (by Tullibards Bennys Legacy out of Fairy Bride xx, by Brian Boru xx). Loughtown Cici (CC Captain Cruise X White Clover) and SF Sportsfield Rising Star (Golden Master xx X Ghareeb xx) are the two Traditionally-bred Irish Sport Horses lining out this year.
In total, riders from eight individual nations will be mounted on Irish-bred horses. These countries are Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and the USA.
