The FEI/WBFSH Eventing World Breeding Championship for Young Horses takes place in Le Lion d’Angers, France, this week, from the 21st to 24th October. A total of thirty Irish-bred horses will contest the championship across the Six Year Old (CCI2*-L) and Seven Year Old (CCI3*-L) divisions.
Eight Irish-bred Six Year Olds will represent six nations; Australia, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy & New Zealand.
Of the sixty horses entered to contest the CCI3*-L, twenty-two are Irish bred, accounting for an impressive 37% of the field. Oliver Townend (GBR) returns to the French venue with Cooley Rosalent, last year’s Six Year Old Silver medallist. Ireland’s Cathal Daniel’s with LEB Empress, and Great Britain’s Tom McEwen with MHS Brown Jack, took 5th and 6th places respectively last year, and both return to Le Lion d’Angers again this year with those the same mounts.

While not Irish-bred, it would be remiss of to not also mention Cooley Wish Upon A Star (Comilfo Plus x Ogano Sitte). Previously named Color D’Hyrencourt Z, he was bred by André Henry in Belgium. Three of us purchased him together as a foal, owning him in partnership until his three year old year, and he spent his formative years being raised in Ireland!
